On October 22, 2026, American Express reworked the Hotel Credit on the US Platinum Card. It is now called the Lodging Credit, it also covers Airbnb Luxe, and there is a new Airbnb Experiences credit. That sounds like more. The real news is in the fine print: starting January 1, 2027, a Fine Hotels + Resorts booking only triggers the credit if it covers at least two nights.

Max from maxmilespoints summed it up well in a 45-second reel. Here are the details, sorted by what changes in practice.

Up front: this applies to the US Platinum (personal and business). The German Platinum is not affected by this change.

What stays the same

The amount and the split are unchanged:

  • up to $300 from January to June
  • up to $300 from July to December
  • up to $600 per calendar year in total, as a statement credit
  • prepaid bookings through Amex Travel only

The Hotel Collection already had a two-night minimum. Nothing changes there.

New: Airbnb through Amex Travel

Since October 22, more than one million Airbnb listings can be searched on AmexTravel.com and in the Amex Travel app. Booking, changes and cancellations happen on Airbnb itself; you link your Amex account to your Airbnb account.

What you get:

  • 5 points per dollar with the Platinum and Business Platinum on eligible prepaid Airbnb bookings, Luxe or regular homes
  • Airbnb Luxe counts toward the Lodging Credit, but only for stays of two nights or more. Luxe is Airbnb's high-end segment; regular homes earn points only, no credit.
  • Up to $250 Airbnb Experiences credit per calendar year

The $250 credit comes with a chain of conditions

The Experiences credit is not free money. It has to be unlocked first:

  1. Make a prepaid Airbnb Luxe booking through Amex Travel
  2. Wait until the booking is confirmed
  3. Then pay for Experiences directly on Airbnb with your Platinum

Experiences that redirect to third-party booking platforms don't count. And the credit expires at the end of the calendar year in which it was unlocked. Book Luxe in November and you have a few weeks.

Honestly counted, the credit is only worth something if you would have booked a two-night Luxe stay anyway and wanted an Experience there regardless. For everyone else it is, like most restricted credits, a shopping list rather than money.

The catch: two nights at Fine Hotels + Resorts

Until now a single FHR night was enough to trigger the $300 per half-year. That was the most popular way to use the credit: one night at an expensive property, $300 back, plus breakfast, a $100 property credit and late checkout. What that looks like in practice is in my Fine Hotels + Resorts review.

Starting January 1, 2027:

  • An FHR booking must cover at least two nights for the Lodging Credit to apply
  • Per the wording of the Amex terms, the rule applies to the statement credit. They say nothing about a minimum stay for the FHR benefits themselves (breakfast, property credit, 4 p.m. checkout).
  • One-night bookings in 2026 still fall under the old rule. If you haven't used your July to December 2026 credit yet, one night still works until year end.

What it means in practice

One night at an FHR property often costs $500 or more. With the credit it effectively cost $200 plus the benefits on top. With two nights required, the outlay doubles while the credit stays at $300. The math breaks for anyone who booked only for the credit and doesn't need the second night.

To be fair: if you stay two nights or more anyway, you won't notice. And Airbnb Luxe adds a third way to place the $300, useful for families or groups for whom a hotel room doesn't fit.

My take: Airbnb is a nice add-on, the two-night FHR rule is the real devaluation. From 2027, count the US Platinum annual fee without the one-night trick. How US cards compare with German ones overall is in US vs. German credit cards.
