Best Hotel Loyalty Programs 2026 for Cardholders

If you own a premium credit card like the Amex Platinum, or are even just considering getting one, the question comes up sooner or later: which hotel loyalty program deserves your attention? And which one delivers the greatest real value for credit card holders?

I've been using multiple programs in parallel for years and have a clear opinion based on concrete experience. Here's my honest assessment of the four major hotel programs, specifically from the perspective of credit card holders in Germany.

The Most Important Thing First

Not every loyalty program treats credit card holders equally. Some programs make it easy to earn and use a status. Others require 50 or more nights per year before the interesting benefits kick in. And then there are programs that look attractive on paper but barely deliver in practice.

The Amex Platinum is the most important lever in Germany because it automatically comes with Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite. Two statuses, zero effort. Beyond that, additional programs can be unlocked through points transfers, status matching, and targeted bookings.

Hilton Gold Status benefits

Hilton Honors: The Clear Winner for Credit Card Holders

Why Hilton Takes First Place

Hilton Honors is the best hotel loyalty program for people who earn their status through a credit card. The reason is simple: Hilton Gold is the only hotel status attainable through credit cards that offers complimentary breakfast. And breakfast is the benefit that counts at every single stay.

Breakfast with Hilton Gold applies to two guests, at all Hilton brands worldwide (with slight variations at Conrad and Waldorf Astoria, where it's granted as an F&B credit). It's automatically activated at check-in, without discussion, without proof, without special requests.

Status Access

  • Gold: Automatic with the Amex Platinum
  • Diamond: Not attainable through credit cards, requires 60 nights or 42 stays per year

Benefits in Detail

Gold benefits:

  • Complimentary breakfast for two guests (or F&B credit at Conrad, Waldorf Astoria, LXR)
  • Room upgrade when available (within room category, including executive floor, excluding suites)
  • 80 percent bonus on base points
  • Fifth night free on award stays
  • Late check-out based on availability

What Gold doesn't include:

  • Executive lounge access (Diamond only)
  • Guaranteed suite upgrades (Diamond only)
  • Personal attention from the hotel manager (Diamond only)

Earning and Redeeming Points

You earn Hilton Honors points automatically with every stay. As a Gold member, that's 18 base points per dollar plus 80 percent bonus, meaning 32.4 points per dollar. On a stay costing 300 EUR (approx. 330 USD), you'd earn roughly 10,700 points.

The value of a Hilton point typically ranges from 0.4 to 0.6 cents. That sounds low, but the high earning rate compensates. In practice, ten overnight stays earn you enough points for one to two free nights at a mid-range Hilton hotel.

Especially relevant for credit card holders: Membership Rewards points from Amex can be transferred to Hilton at a ratio of 1:2. That means 10,000 MR points become 20,000 Hilton Honors points. That's not the most efficient transfer (airline transfers often offer more value), but it can be enough for a night at a Hilton Garden Inn or Hampton Inn.

The Network

Hilton has over 7,500 hotels worldwide across 22 brands. In Germany, there are approximately 85 Hilton properties, from Hampton by Hilton to Waldorf Astoria. Coverage is good in Europe, growing in Asia, and excellent in the US and Caribbean.

The brands range from Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn (mid-range) through DoubleTree and Hilton Hotels (upscale) to Conrad, Waldorf Astoria, and LXR (luxury).

My Verdict

Hilton Honors is the program with the best value-for-effort ratio for credit card holders. Breakfast alone justifies the membership and preferential booking at Hilton hotels. If you have the Amex Platinum, Hilton should be your first choice whenever a comparable property is available.

Marriott Bonvoy: The Largest Network, the Weakest Gold Status

The Dilemma

Marriott Bonvoy is the world's largest hotel loyalty program. Over 8,500 hotels, over 30 brands, 139 countries. The likelihood of finding a Marriott property at your destination is higher than with any other chain. And that's exactly the problem: Marriott knows this and has no incentive to make its Gold status attractive.

The Gold Elite status at Marriott, which comes automatically with the Amex Platinum, is the weakest comparable status in the entire hotel industry.

Status Access

  • Gold Elite: Automatic with the Amex Platinum, or 25 nights per year
  • Platinum Elite: 50 nights per year, or through certain US credit cards (not available in Germany)
  • Titanium Elite: 75 nights per year
  • Ambassador Elite: 100 nights and 23,000 USD spend per year

Benefits in Detail

Gold Elite benefits:

  • Enhanced room (better room within the same category)
  • Late check-out until 2 PM (based on availability)
  • 25 percent bonus on base points
  • Welcome gift (250-500 bonus points)

What Gold Elite doesn't include:

  • Breakfast (Platinum and above only)
  • True room upgrades to higher categories (Platinum and above only)
  • Lounge access (Platinum and above only)
  • Suite upgrades (Titanium and above only)

Earning and Redeeming Points

You earn Marriott Bonvoy points at 10 base points per dollar plus 25 percent bonus as a Gold member, totaling 12.5 points per dollar. On 300 EUR in spend (approx. 330 USD), that's roughly 4,125 points.

The value of a Bonvoy point ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 cents. That's more per point than Hilton, but the lower earning rate balances it out. At the end of the day, you earn similar value per stay at both Marriott and Hilton in terms of points.

An important advantage of Marriott Bonvoy: you can transfer Bonvoy points to numerous airline partners at a 3:1 ratio. On transfers of 60,000 points, you get a bonus of 5,000 miles. That makes Bonvoy points more interesting for airline redemptions than Hilton points. If you'd rather redeem points for flights than hotels, Marriott has the edge in points flexibility.

The Network

The portfolio ranges from Fairfield and Moxy (budget) through Courtyard and AC Hotels (mid-range) to JW Marriott, W Hotels, St. Regis, and Ritz-Carlton (luxury). In Germany, there are over 100 Marriott properties. Globally, Marriott is present at nearly every destination.

My Verdict

Marriott Bonvoy is a must-have program because of its size. You'll inevitably end up at Marriott hotels, and then it's good to have Gold status. But as a credit card holder, you get so little from Marriott Gold that you should never actively choose the chain over Hilton when a comparable Hilton hotel is available.

IHG One Rewards: The Underrated Program

Why IHG Deserves More Attention

IHG One Rewards flies under the radar in Germany. Most credit card holders focus on Hilton and Marriott and forget that IHG has a portfolio with relevant hotels at many destinations.

The brands InterContinental, Kimpton, Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, and voco together represent over 6,000 hotels worldwide. In Germany, IHG operates around 50 hotels, including solid Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn properties as well as the InterContinental Berlin and the InterContinental Dusseldorf.

Status Access for Credit Card Holders

Here's the catch: IHG doesn't offer automatic status through European credit cards. In the US, there's the IHG One Rewards Premier Card, which grants Platinum Elite status. In Germany, this product doesn't exist.

Access for German credit card holders comes through two paths:

  1. Status matching: Request a match from Hilton Gold or Marriott Gold to IHG Gold or Platinum. This doesn't always work, but when it does, it's a free status gain.

  2. IHG One Rewards program directly: Earn status through stays. Gold requires 20 nights, Platinum 40 nights, Diamond 70 nights per year.

Benefits in Detail

Gold Elite: Room upgrade when available, late check-out, 20 percent bonus points, and a welcome amenity. Solid but not spectacular.

Platinum Elite (attainable through status match): Everything from Gold, plus 60 percent bonus points and at some brands breakfast or lounge access. This is where it gets interesting.

Diamond Elite: The full package with guaranteed upgrades to the best available category, 100 percent bonus points, and breakfast or lounge access at all brands. Difficult to reach through a match, though.

Why IHG Is Ideal for Certain Travelers

IHG has some strengths that neither Hilton nor Marriott offer in the same way:

InterContinental Hotels: IHG's flagship brand offers outstanding hotels at many locations. The InterContinental in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Paris are first-class properties. As a status member, you often get good upgrades and sometimes lounge access there.

Kimpton Hotels: Boutique hotels with character that stand out from the often interchangeable chain hotels. Kimpton hotels offer a daily happy hour for all guests (not just status members) and often have a more personal atmosphere.

Value for money: IHG hotels, especially Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express, often offer better value than comparable Hilton or Marriott properties. If you travel budget-consciously but still want to enjoy status benefits, IHG is a good choice.

Earning and Redeeming Points

You earn IHG One Rewards points at 10 base points per dollar; as a Platinum member with a 60 percent bonus, that's 16 points per dollar. Point value ranges from 0.5 to 0.7 cents. Redemptions start at 10,000 points per night and can reach 60,000 to 80,000 points at InterContinental or Kimpton properties.

My Verdict

IHG One Rewards is the most underrated loyalty program for credit card holders in Germany. It requires more initiative (status matching, no automatic status via Amex), but the hotels are often an equal or better alternative to Hilton and Marriott. If you can secure a status match, IHG is an excellent addition to your loyalty program portfolio.

Hotel check-in with status benefits

World of Hyatt: The Best Benefits, the Hardest Access

The Paradox

World of Hyatt is the loyalty program that offers the best status benefits in the entire industry. Globalist (the highest tier) is widely recognized as the most valuable hotel status: guaranteed suite upgrades, breakfast everywhere, club lounge access, guest status sharing, free parking.

The problem for credit card holders in Germany: there's no easy way to obtain Hyatt status through a German credit card.

Status Access for Credit Card Holders

In the US, the World of Hyatt Credit Card automatically grants Discoverist status and a path to Globalist. In Germany, this card doesn't exist.

Your options:

  1. Status matching: Request a Hyatt challenge with Hilton Gold or Marriott Gold. If successful, you receive Explorist status for 60 to 90 days with the opportunity to keep it through qualifying nights.

  2. Direct qualification: 30 nights for Explorist, 60 nights for Globalist. Unrealistic for most leisure travelers.

  3. Membership Rewards transfer: You can transfer Amex MR points to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. This is one of the best MR transfer partners of all. 15,000 MR points become 15,000 Hyatt points, enough for a night at a Category 4 hotel (Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt at many locations).

Benefits in Detail

Discoverist (base status):

  • Preferred member rate
  • 10 percent bonus points
  • Complimentary water and tea

Explorist (attainable through challenge):

  • Room upgrade when available (including club rooms and suites, depending on the hotel)
  • 20 percent bonus points
  • 2 PM late check-out
  • Welcome amenity

Globalist (hard to reach, but spectacular):

  • Guaranteed suite upgrade when available (when booking at least 72 hours before arrival)
  • Breakfast everywhere, no exceptions
  • Club lounge access
  • 30 percent bonus points
  • 4 PM late check-out
  • Free parking
  • Guest status: a companion receives Explorist benefits

Why Hyatt Belongs on Your List Anyway

Even without easy status access, Hyatt is relevant for credit card holders for two reasons:

Points transfer: The transfer from MR points to Hyatt is one of the most value-generating transfers available. A Hyatt point is typically worth 1.5 to 2.5 cents. Concrete example: the Park Hyatt Vienna costs 25,000 to 35,000 points per night (depending on season); the cash price is often 400 to 700 EUR. With a 1:1 transfer from MR to Hyatt, that's up to 2.5 cents per point. By comparison, an MR point is only worth 0.4 to 0.6 cents in a Hilton transfer (1:2 ratio).

Hotel quality: Hyatt hotels are, on average, qualitatively superior to comparable Hilton or Marriott properties. That's a generalization with exceptions, of course, but it broadly holds true. Park Hyatt, Andaz, and Grand Hyatt hotels are consistently excellent. Hyatt's portfolio is smaller (around 1,300 hotels worldwide), which enables stricter quality control.

The Network

Hyatt's weakness is size. Around 1,300 hotels worldwide, with only a handful in Germany (Park Hyatt Hamburg, Andaz Munich, Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf, Hyatt Regency Mainz, and a few others). In many cities, there's no Hyatt hotel.

But where Hyatt is present, the hotels are often outstanding. And the portfolio is growing, particularly in Europe.

My Verdict

World of Hyatt is the loyalty program for advanced credit card holders who are willing to put in the effort of a status match and targeted points transfers. Direct status access through European credit cards is missing, but the points redemption via MR transfer is so valuable that Hyatt should be on every serious strategy list.

Which Program Deserves Your Attention?

The answer depends on your travel behavior. Here's my recommendation, ranked by priority.

Priority 1: Hilton Honors

If you have the Amex Platinum, use the Hilton Gold status actively. Book Hilton hotels whenever a comparable property is available. Breakfast alone makes the difference. Link your Hilton profile to your Amex and make sure the status is properly registered.

Priority 2: World of Hyatt (for Points Redemptions)

Transfer MR points to Hyatt when you're planning a night at a Hyatt hotel. The value per point at Hyatt is higher than with nearly any other transfer partner. You don't need status to benefit from points redemption. If you can secure a status match to Explorist, all the better.

Priority 3: Marriott Bonvoy

Take the Gold status that comes with the Amex, but don't expect much. Marriott is relevant because of its size. There are cities and regions where Marriott is the only option. In those cases, Gold status is better than no status. Collect Bonvoy points on the side and use them either for free nights or airline transfers.

Priority 4: IHG One Rewards

Try a status match from Hilton Gold to IHG Gold or Platinum. If it works, you have an additional network with solid hotels. If not, nothing is lost. IHG is particularly interesting for trips to Asia, the Middle East, and the US, where the network is strong.

Amex Platinum Card

What I Do in Practice

My personal strategy is the result of several years of experience and optimization:

  1. I book Hilton by preference, because the Gold status with breakfast offers the greatest immediate value.
  2. I use Hyatt for special stays and redeem MR points for them, because the value per point is highest.
  3. I book Marriott when it makes geographic sense, and take the Gold status as a nice bonus.
  4. I keep my IHG status active through a match and use it when IHG hotels are the best option at my destination.
  5. I earn MR points through my Amex and transfer them to the relevant program as needed.

This strategy isn't the only right one. But it maximizes the value from the available credit card benefits without requiring you to spend 100 nights per year in hotels. And that's ultimately the point: as a credit card holder, you have access to status benefits that were once reserved for road warriors. The art lies in deploying those benefits wisely.
